This database of plainchant sources
used in studies at the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at Erlangen-Nürnberg
University was created with the programme dBASE III PLUS. Its purpose
is primarily to inform the user which sources were utilized, and part
of their contents listed, in the following studies:

A small amount of information about
the sources themselves is also included in the database, but must
not be regarded as totally reliable. Citations of source location
and shelfmark, type of source, provenance, and date are naturally
not consistent throughout the above studies, and many inconsistencies
remain in the present database.
The material on which the above studies were based was provided by
the microfilms collected by Bruno Stäblein at the Erlangen Institute.
But the database was created neither with the knowledge of nor in
collaboration with my colleagues there. They are therefore responsible
neither for the conception of the database nor the errors it contains.
The database is placed here at the disposal of colleagues in accordance
with the aims of the IMS Study Group 'Cantus Planus', which include
the exchange of data in electronic form. |

Field 1 HS gives the location
and shelfmark of the source. For the purposes of indexing, the Roman
numerals in some (but not all) shelfmarks have been converted to Arabic.
Field 2 TYPUS gives the type of source. Many sources have mixed
contents, and these are stated as far as possible, with the main contents
appearing first (for the purposes of indexing).
In dBASE III PLUS, the secondary contents can be listed using the
command Field 3 PROV gives the provenance of the source.
Many place-names have been left in their German form. Generalized
assignations to countries or religious orders are given in adjectival
form: e.g. französisch, zisterziensisch (in lower case, which
dBASE III PLUS indexes after upper-case names). Names of persons who
copied or owned the source are given in this field. Field 4
DATUM gives the approximate or exact date of the source. For shorter
or longer periods, such as a century, or the beginning or end of a
century, dates are given in a form such as 1100-1200, 1100-1120, or
1180-1200. Many conflicting dates given in the above-mentioned studies
have been left unresolved. Field 5 LIT gives the studies
which utilized the source, in the order and with the abbreviations
given above. For Ky Gl Sa and Ag, the numbers assigned to the source
by Landwehr-Melnicki, Bosse, Thannabaur and Schildbach are given.
